HEADER: Dan Kirkup heads the Reds winner against Worcester

Big defender Dan Kirkup netted a second half header from a Craig Johnston corner, the only goal of the game, to seal victory for Darren Edmondson’s side in front of 267 fans.

Johnston was influential all game, showing a great range of passing and deliveries from set pieces and he was joined in the centre of midfield by skipper for the night Tony Hopper.

David Hewson was in the stand, watching on after he was ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

The young full-but back will be back in time for pre-season despite rumours that he would be giving up the game.

He said: “I want to be at Workington Reds for as long as I can be. There had been a rumour I was leaving and I have spoke to Tony Elliott, who had heard the rumour, but I just want to get myself fit and be back out playing. I am looking to be back for pre-season.”

In the first half Reds played some brilliant football, knocking the ball around confidently and finding spaces in the Worcester defence.

Jonny Wright ran the line well and was a threat all game.

And it was Wright that should have put Reds ahead in the 17th minute. A Gari Rowntree free kick was blocked and when the ball was played back in, Anthony Wright cross for his namesake, who controlled the ball well but shot over the bar.

Minutes later, Jonny Wright had another chance to put Reds ahead. Johnston’s pinpoint pass sent the pacey striker away, his early shot from 20 yards was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Chris Sanna in the Worcester goal.

Anthony Wright was replaced by Andy Hardman midway through the first half. Wright picked up a metatarsal injury and was taken off as a precaution.

Reds: Taylor, Andrews, Rowntree, May (Gray 85), Kirkup, McLuckie, Johnston, Hopper, Berkeley, J Wright, A Wright (Hardman 22). Subs (not used): Gullen, Edmondson, Collin.

Crowd: 267.
