And the outcome will be vitally important to Reds’ fellow Cumbrians, Barrow.

Barrow, who are at home to Worcester, are fifth - the last play-off place - and Harrogate at sixth, both on 73 points.

Barrow, though, have a much better goal difference - plus 30 against Harrogate’s plus 14 - so they can decide their own fate by beating Worcester.

It will be Worcester’s second trip into Cumbria in five days. They lost 1-0 at Workington on Tuesday night, going down to Dan Kirkup’s first goal for Reds.

Man of the match Craig Johnston filled the vacant spot left by the suspended Graham Anthony. His passing was key to the Reds success.

Jonny Wright partnered Matthew Berkeley up front and both players had chances to seal the victory.

Injured Dave Hewson insisted that he was not about to give up the game and said: “I have damaged ligaments in my left ankle after a collision in the match with Burscough last week. It was one of those things that can happen and wasn’t anybody’s fault.

“That’s not the ankle that has caused me problems in the past. I broke the right one against Carlisle Utd in a pre-season game two years ago and also damaged the ligaments in that ankle at Bury this season.

“I think I have been unlucky with injuries but it’s never made me consider finishing with the game.”

Anthony Wright, who has also missed quite a bit of the season through injury, was brought off after 22 minutes last night as a precaution.

He suffered a fracture to his foot earlier in the campaign and was struggling against Worcester on the hard ground.

Reds boos Darren Edmondson said: “There’s no point in taking any risks at this stage of the season and we want both Dabba and Anthony fit and firing for the start of next season.”
