Workington Reds top scorer Scott Allison doesn’t care if he finds the back of the net so long as the team is picking up wins.

The in-form 25-year-old netted his second hat-trick of the season on Tuesday in a 3-0 win over Cumbrian rivals Kendal Town in the Doodson League Cup.

The red-haired forward, who lives in Brough, near Kirkby Stephen, scored a rare hat-trick of penalties in Reds’ 5-0 FA Cup first qualifying win over Colwyn Bay.

Allison, who has been deployed as a striker in several games rather than in his usual wing position, is now on 10 goals for the season, just two shy of his overall tally from the 2014/2015 campaign.

He said: “I wasn’t expecting to have scored so many so soon. I got 12 in total last season and I should get above that comfortably, hopefully.”

Allison is relishing his new role in a central forward position, but credits strike partner Matty Tymon in helping set up all three of his goals on Tuesday.

“I am really enjoying it,” he said. “It’s quite new to me. Matty laid on all three on Tuesday. You have to give a lot of credit to Matty.

“I think it will hopefully be my turn in the next match to lay on the goals for him.

“It’s obviously good to score but it’s only important when those goals win games or pick up points. If the team is winning I am not fussed about scoring.”

The Reds management team showed their intention to take the Doodson League Cup seriously when they picked a near full strength line-up for Tuesday’s game.

And Allison is confident that Reds can go all the way in the competition. He said: “It was a strong team. Last year we were disappointed when we went out early. We wanted to win it last year.

“It’s always important we have a good cup run. There is no reason why we can’t win it.”

Workington will now switch their focus to a massive Evo-Stik Premier Division clash at home to high-flying Salford City on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Fourth-placed Salford are one place above Workington in the play-off positions, but have played two games less than the west Cumbrians.

Borough Park is expected to be packed for the tasty encounter as Salford are owned by Manchester United legends Phil and Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

The ‘Class Of 92: Out Of Their League’ documentary shown recently on BBC One has further increased interest in Salford, as did their first round FA Cup triumph over Notts County.
