Workington Reds boss Lee Andrews says their superb second half display was key to their FA Cup victory on Saturday.

Reds beat Shildon 3-1 in the second qualifying round of the competition so will be in the hat for today's draw.

But the home side did not have it all their own way in the early stages of the game, with keeper Aaran Taylor saving a penalty to deny the visitors an equaliser before half time.

"At half time we were 1-0 up and then in the first half hour of the second half I thought we totally dominated and that's when the game was won," said joint manager Andrews.

"We knew that they would come out and try and play a bit of football but we were disappointed that we didn't get in their faces and make it hard for them.

"We spoke about it at half time and all credit to the lads they came out in the second half and sorted it out.

"It was a great save from Aaran Taylor although we've probably come to expect it from him now and we shouldn't.

"But we all know what he can do and what he gives us in goal."

Scott Allison opened the scoring for Reds in the first half and Conor Tinnion and Joe McGee rounded up the scoring in a 12-minute spell as the second half opened.

Shildon did come back with a second penalty in the dying stages to deny Reds a clean sheet.

Andrews added: "Scott's goal was important for him as he missed a on-on-one moments earlier.

"James Earl slipped a great ball through and Scott just smashed it into the top corner.

"Then we came out on the front foot in the second half and scored another two good goals.

"I think Conor is better with his head than anyone gives him credit for. Fair play to him, he gambled at the back post, got his head on it and finished it well.

"The third was maybe a little lucky with a deflection but still a good goal.

"We were disappointed to give the second penalty away but I think it was just tired legs, the lads had worked really hard and it was a hot day."

Reds' home league match with Marine on Tuesday night has had to be postponed as their opponents picked up a draw in the FA Cup clash and the replay will be on Tuesday.
