Workington Reds striker Gareth Arnison says his side must be more ruthless in the coming weeks after staggering to a 2-0 victory over Clitheroe on Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old scored twice to see Reds through in the Integro Doodson League Cup on Tuesday, but their opponents made things difficult.

Reds goalkeeper Jonny Jamieson made a string of fine saves including a penalty stop from Sefton Gonzales with the score at 0-0.

He said: “Clitheroe started off really well and played really well in the first half and didn’t give us a lot of time on the ball.

“We were the ones who needed half-time, but we improved in the second half and got a few chances.”

The match was goalless at half-time, but the lively Joe McGee played his part in the goals which were both scored in the final 15 minutes.

Derek Townsley’s men are into the last 16 of the cup and were knocked out of the competition at the second round stage by Warrington last season.

Arnison added: “It’s about mentality and the way we start each game in the first 15 to 20 minutes. “When we’re at home we want to make that count.

“I had to wait until near the end to score. I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t score on Saturday, but I was pleased to get two on Tuesday.”

The Reds have a double header in the coming days and play Halesowen at home on Saturday before travelling to Hyde on Monday.

A new date of Saturday, April 19 has also been set for their home league match against Matlock Town.
