Tenacious Workington Reds star Joe McGee came in for a heap of praise after a battling performance on Tuesday night.

The youngster was outstanding in the League Cup win over Ramsbottom, picking up a goal in the first half and also holding his nerve to put away the winning penalty.

And boss Dave Hewson was delighted with McGee's form, after coming back from injury.

"Joe worked really hard, he was busy and full of energy, sometimes things didn't come off for him but it wasn't for a lack of trying," said Hewson.

"I think he wanted to show what he can still offer, after missing out on a few games at the start of the season.

"And when Joe has got the ball at his feet and he's going forward, driving at the defenders it's good to watch.

"He was still going in the 88th minute, he's ghosting past four of them and putting it on a plate for one of the lads so credit to Joe.

"Then his penalty at the end just capped off a really good performance."

Another boost for Reds was the second start of the season for Anthony Wright, and he showed he is still a force to be reckoned with.

"Again Wrighty showed all of his qualities and what he can do when he gets on the ball, passes it and breaks up play," said Hewson.

"He's kind of moulded himself into a really good centre midfield player. This was a very accomplished performance from him.

"We just need to keep getting him 90 minutes and as much game times as we can because he's been out a long time and to throw him back in wouldn't be the right thing.

"We've got to slowly and gradually bring him back up to match fitness and he's going to be a great addition to the squad when he's back.

Wright is also spending time with Carlisle City to get more game time as he continues his return from injury.

"It's a win, win for both clubs," said Hewson. "They get an experienced and quality player in Anthony Wright and we get minutes but, at any time when we want him back with us he will be, so there's no time stipulation on it."

Reds will assess three injuries picked up in the penalty shootout win over Ramsbottom.

James Earl has a slight cut and bang to his head while Matty Douglas has swelling above his right eye. Conor Tinnion also took a knock but he will miss Saturday's home league clash with Hednesford through suspension.
