Boss Dave Hewson is hoping Workington Reds can hang on to bright talent Sam Joel.

The youngster scored two goals in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Stourbridge, and Hewson says there is still more to come from him.

“He’s a bright prospect and I think everyone is enjoying seeing him play,” said Hewson.

“There’s things he needs to work on and he’s not getting ahead of himself.

"But I’m really pleased with the progress he is making and the contribution he making to the squad. He’s so lively, such a threat. I’ve nothing but praise for the boy.

“He will continue to learn and to work hard because he has a great attitude."

“When he plays for us, he is a constant threat," Hewson added.

"He’s got goals in him, he’s got pace and he’s got skill so he has all the attributes to go on and be a top player.

"I just hope we can keep hold of him for as long as we possibly can.”

Joel spent the bulk of his career with Blackburn Rovers, having come through their Academy from the age of 10.

This season he spent a trial period with Bolton Wanderers and turned out for Holker Old Boys before joining Reds in January.

Hewson also praised his other goalscorer from Saturday, Dave Symington, for his discipline in his role and for his superb strike that put them 1-0 ahead.

“That goal is exactly what he has in his locker,” added Hewson.
