Former Workington Reds manager Darren Edmondson said it was heartbreaking watching his old side lose in the play-off semi-finals last season, as he prepares to face them at Borough Park tomorrow.

Edmondson, who managed Reds between 2006 and 2013, will bring his newly promoted Barrow side to Borough Park tomorrow for a pre-season friendly (3pm ko).

The former Workington defender enjoyed a superb campaign last season at the Barrow helm.

He guided them to the Conference North title and is now preparing for life in the top tier of the newly-renamed National League.

However, he has still kept a close eye on his old side’s fortunes and was in the crowd at Borough Park as Workington lost 1-0 to Ilkeston in the Evo-Stik Premier Division play-off semi-finals last season.

He said: “I was devastated for them. They came so far and it was set up nicely for them. It was heartbreaking.”

Edmondson has been impressed with what he has seen so far from Reds under the new management team of Derek Townsley, Dave Hewson and Lee Andrews.

He said: “I came down to watch the Carlisle pre-season game. Reds played very well. They distributed the ball and looked comfortable in possession.

“They have managed to keep the majority of players from last season. The players already know Degsy [Derek Townsley], that continuity is vital.

“Fingers crossed they can continue where they finished and go one better from last season.”

Reds utilised Barrow’s resources last season when attacking midfielder Alex Newby joined on loan.

On the prospect of any Barrow players joining Reds on loan this coming season, Edmondson said: “I know the staff and we have spoken about a few things.

“If we can continue to help out then we will do.”
