Workington Reds FA Cup dream is over for another year after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Matlock Town last night.

Reds boss Derek Townsley was disappointed with the result but admitted that poor defending and a lack of finishing power cost his side.

"In the first half I thought we were at it but it was deja vu, the same as Saturday, a goal a couple of minutes before half time took the wind out of our sails," said Townsley.

"The first half I thought we were the better team but the second and third goals were sloppy defending which cost us.

"We're not clinical enough in front of goal. It was evident tonight but we can't defend like that and expect to win games.

"We get good delivery from both sides but we don't seem to get anyone on the end of these crosses."

Matlock went 2-0 up with two well struck goals either side of half time and then added a third from the penalty spot to make the game safe.

Reds did hit back with a late goal from Dave Symington but it wasn't enough to get them back in the tie.

On Saturday the two sides will clash again in the league at Borough Park.

But Reds will be without James Earl who is now suspended for three matches. And Scott Allison is only 50/50 to return.

Townsley add: "From their own point of view the lads should want to go out on Saturday and put it right.

"We are hurting right now so they want to get out on that pitch and should be looking to put it right."
