After more success on the road, and progress up the league, table Workington Reds might now have to sit out their next two scheduled Evo Stik Premier League fixtures.

Definitely off is tomorrow’s trip to Salford City, while Saturday’s home clash with Nantwich looks as though it will be replaced by a County Cup tie against Kirkoswald.

Players and management came off the field at Stamford on Saturday, after a 2-1 win, to be told that Salford had drawn 1-1 with Bradford Park Avenue and would be involved in a replay tomorrow night.

To add to Reds’ frustrations their opponents in the County Cup, Westmorland League side Kirkoswald weren’t interested in switching the tie to midweek at Borough Park, so will stage the tie on Saturday with a 1.30pm kick-off.

However, Reds are now without a game on Saturday, October 24 as scheduled opponents Stourbridge are still in the FA Cup.

Evo Stik League officials have suggested Reds could play Kirkoswald on that date and go ahead with the fixture this weekend against Nantwich.

Reds secretary Alec Graham said: “There’s already been a lot of work gone into this and we are waiting now for Kirkoswald to come back to us.

“We have already told our sponsors for the Nantwich game that it is off, and had offered them a new date later in the season.

“Hopefully, they could still switch back to Saturday if Kirkoswald agree to play on the 24th.”

Manager Derek Townsley, who is happy to play his first team in the County Cup, said: “It’s frustrating that we can’t go out there on Tuesday against Salford.

“That’s the second time in a fortnight that we have missed out because of cup replays.

“I know we have some tired bodies after playing for 10 men for 45 minutes at Stamford, so there are two ways of looking at it.

“But I think really we would have liked to be playing again on Tuesday.

“I’m really pleased with how we coped at Stamford after losing Gari [Rowntree].

“The disappointing thing is one of their players said to our bench he thought it was a fair tackle. But under the circumstances the players responded really well.

“We knew there was a good spirit in the team and that was very evident here. I thought they all worked exceptionally hard to get us through to the three points.”

Reds have put seven days notice in on a striker from the league below and that expires on Tuesday when Townsley will be able to talk to the player.
