Goal-scoring midfielder Rob Wilson will be welcomed back by Workington Reds for their trip to play Stafford Rangers.

This is a boost for the club after losing Anthony Wright to a sprained ankle during Tuesday night’s Cumberland Cup win over Cleator Moor Celtic.

Wilson pulled out in the warm-up before last Saturday’s match with Warrington Town but Reds joint boss Dave Hewson believes he will be ready to make the long trip to Stafford this weekend.

“It was just a precaution to leave him out on Tuesday, we just didn’t want to risk it,” explained Hewson.

“He wasn’t right for last Saturday but we will make sure he gets the rest and recovery he needs to make sure he’s right and ready for this Saturday.”

And he spoke of his disappointment for Wright, who was just returning to full fitness after a six-month lay-off with a groin injury.

Wright had a double hernia operation back in September but was really starting to make his presence felt in the Reds side again over the past few weeks.

Hewson added: “It’s a real shame because Wrighty was just getting back to full fitness.

“I thought he was outstanding on Saturday and I thought he had another good game on Tuesday night.

"It’s just typical for the lad, he has had a lot of bad injuries over the last few years and this is another unfortunate one for him.”

Hewson believes the Stafford game is a huge one for the club as they aim to get back into the league’s play-off positions.
