Hat-Trick hero Dave Symington says he is out to catch leading goal scorer Scott Allison by the end of Workington Reds' season.

Symington put two away from the penalty spot and added a superb volley in last weekend's win over Mickleover.

That takes his tally up to nine for the term, two behind striker Allison but he says he is hungry for more.

"I'm trying to catch him but he keeps adding one or two more to his tally," said Symington.

"So I need to start scoring more as well and hopefully I will have caught him by the end of the season."

The midfielder admitted last Saturday's effort was his first open age hat-trick, having only one other under his belt as a YTS player at Carlisle United.

And it was a quickfire set of three, all coming in a crazy eight-minute spell for Workington just inside the second half.

"Yeah I was delighted. I've only scored one other and that was as a YTS player," he added.

"This time I've got two penalties but I should have put another one away as well.

"When I stood up to take the second my heart was pounding.

"But I was pleased with the volley. It's what you like to do as a winger.

"You come in from the other flank and you gamble on where the ball is going to go.

"Thankfully it came to my feet, I hit it first time with my left foot and it went in."

Symington also had praise for striker Jack Ryan, who had another great game, and said he is really starting to find form.

"The last couple of weeks Jack has come on massively," said Symington.

"He's been unbelievable for us, holding the ball up and passing it. That's what he has come in to do really and he's starting to show what he can do."

Ryan was unlucky not to get a goal himself and he had offered his services for the third penalty.

But Symington was determined to get his hat-trick at the second attempt – and did so.

"I wanted the hat-trick, I definitely wanted that goal," he laughed.

Workington are now looking forward to a tough test against ninth placed Matlock on Saturday.

Only two places separate the sides, with Reds currently in seventh, so it looks set for a cracking tie at Causeway Lane.
