Hat-trick hero Scott Allison fired a classy Workington Reds into the second round of the Doodson League Cup last night at the expense of Kendal Town.

The lethal finisher netted a second-half hat-trick as Reds outclassed Kendal in a 3-0 victory at Borough Park.

However, Kendal, who play a league below Reds in the Evo-Stik First Division North, stood up to Workington in the first half as the wind and rain swirled around the ground.

But Workington showed their quality in the second half to outclass their Cumbrian rivals.

You won’t find many better taken hat-tricks across world football as Allison justified the management team’s decision to continue to play him up front.

Assistant manager Dave Hewson said: “It was a very pleasing performance all round.

“In the first half we were just 10 per cent off it. We felt if we could raise our game it was only a matter of time before we got our goal.

“Credit to the boys.”

And on the hat-trick hero Allison, Hewson added: “We were toying with playing Scotty up front all season. He is a threat and is composed. I think with his performances he has played himself into that position.

“Matty Tymon set him up for the goals. As a pair they did great tonight. They have given us a lot to think about as who to go with on Saturday.”

Workington will now switch their focus to a huge Evo-Stik Premier Division clash against Salford City at home on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Salford, firmly in the TV spotlight at the moment, are one place above Workington in fourth and have a 100 per cent away record, while Reds are unbeaten at home in the league.

Hewson added: “They are all big but this is huge. There is a lot of hype around Salford at the minute. We go into it full of confidence.”
