Workington Reds youngster Robbie Hebson says his run in the side during pre-season could be the golden ticket to regular first team action.

The winger has featured in four of his side's eight pre-season games so far which have brought three wins, three draws and two defeats.

General first team manager Derek Townsley has had to field below-strength sides due to injuries, holidays and work commitments.

Hebson made 12 league and three cup appearances after being called into the first team squad in February.

The teenager was also a regular for Reds' reserve side last term.

He said: "When we get everyone back we'll have a good squad and I expect us to do well.

"I feel I'm getting more of an opportunity this year. I just want to try and prove myself at this level and that I'm good enough to play at this level.

"I feel I'm at that stage that I'm capable of starting games and contributing this season.

"I want to get involved as much as I can and break into that first team. It's what I want to do and it's my aim for this season to get into the first 11."

Reds start the new season with an away trip to Rushall Olympic on Saturday, August 13.

Prior to that, they face Kendal Town in their ninth and final pre-season friendly this Saturday.

Meanwhile left-back Sam Smith, who made his first team comeback against Lancaster at the weekend, trained again last night.

Smith said: "I enjoyed it against Lancaster. The first 45 minutes were good, but my legs started weren't as good in the second half.

"I think I'll be at full fitness before the start of the season."
