Workington Reds Ladies suffered a reversal of their earlier victory at Haslingden when they went under narrowly on Sunday.

It was the same scoreline as two weeks earlier but this time it was Haslingden who came out on top 4-3 in the League Plate competition.

Reds were without first team regulars Laura Miller, Becky Scott, Katie Maxwell and Megan Batey but still travelled with a good squad.

Goalkeeper Ailsa Cowan was called on to make an early save for Reds before they broke downfield.

Holly Redmond found herself with just the keeper to beat but saw her shot go just wide of the post.

On six minutes Haslingden had their second corner in as many minutes. The first produced a save from Cowan, the second, however found the big Haslingden midfielder stealing a yard on Sarah Scott to swing a foot towards goal to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Reds grabbed an equaliser after a long clearance from Holly Redmond beat the defence and Hayley Bracken latched on to it. With only the keeper to beat, she slotted a neat finish in the bottom corner.

Five minutes later and a lapse in the Reds concentration saw the Haslingden striker in a race to the ball with Reds keeper Cowan, the striker narrowly beat Cowan and poked it past from 18 yards to take the lead 2-1.

Reds suffered a blow when influential midfielder Chloe Henderson was carried off with an ankle injury on 40 minutes and Haslingden maintained a 2-1 lead at the break.

Reds started the second half well with some good work from Rebecca Buchanan resulting in Bracken finishing well to pull them level.

Haslingden got a foothold in the game and for 15 minutes made Reds work hard, with Willow Gray and Sarah Scott handling everything the hosts could throw at them at the heart of the defence.

Reds had a great chance to take the lead on 70 minutes when Hayley Bracken found herself one-on-one with the keeper, only to see the goalie produce a fine save low down to her right.

Five minutes later Reds took the lead against the run of play when Bracken dribbled through four players to shoot from 18 yards.

The keeper saved it but could only parry to the feet of Hannah Geen to tap in from close range to give Reds a 3-2 lead.

The lead was to be short lived as on 80 minutes, keeper Cowan spilled a routine catch resulting in the striker pouncing on the loose ball and being brought down.

Haslingden pulled it back to 3-3 with the resulting penalty. Then, with five minutes remaining, there came a carbon copy of the second goal.

The same striker raced to beat Cowan to the ball, and it was poked home to give the hosts a 4-3 lead and killed the game off for Reds.

Next Sunday, Reds head to Carlisle United in the league, 2pm ko at Creighton RUFC.
