Workington Reds' players need to start taking their chances if they are to kick-start their season, according to assistant manager Dave Hewson.

The West Cumbrians have picked up just one point from their opening two games of the league season following a 1-1 draw at home to Sutton Coldfield Town on Saturday and a 2-0 loss away at Skelmersdale on Tuesday.

However, Workington made a poor start last season when they lost three of their four opening league games, but they still went on to finish as runners-up with the most wins in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

Reds face a long journey to take on Stourbridge tomorrow (3pm ko) and will then welcome Darlington 1883 to Borough Park on Tuesday (7.45pm ko).

Hewson, who is joint-assistant manager alongside Lee Andrews, believes finding that consistency in front of goal is key for Reds.

He said: "It's still early days but obviously we would like to get the first win under our belts.

"Whenever we are on top we need to score and take our chances.

"It's encouraging that we are creating chances but we need to take those chances. We need to get ourselves in front and from then on we can go go and score more.

"We just need to pick the boys up again for Saturday."

Stourbridge, based in the West Midlands, have picked up three points from their opening two games.

Reds beat them home and away last season in the league by a 1-0 scoreline on both occasions.

Stourbridge finished 16th last season, 37 points behind runners-up Workington. However, Hewson won't be taking Stourbridge for granted.

"There are no easy games," he said. "We know what they are about and how they will set up. It's a long way to go but we will go there full of belief."
