Workington Reds’ unbeaten run at Borough Park came to a crushing end at the hands of a dominant Salford City today.

Reds, who were previously unbeaten in the Evo-Stik Premier Division at home, were left humbled in a 4-1 defeat by a classy Salford, co-owned by Manchester United legends Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt.

In a game of stunning goals, Workington were second best throughout much of the encounter against a side who showed their title credentials.

A total of 1,405 fans packed into Borough Park and the quality of the goals certainly gave them value for money on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon.

Salford were 2-0 up within 20 minutes thanks to strikes from Jordan Hulme and former Manchester United striker Danny Webber.

A stunning Joe McGee goal gave Reds hope on 28 minutes, but a 25-yard screamer from the impressive Scott Burton two minutes from half-time effectively wrapped up the points for Salford.

Richie Allen's goal on 74 minutes was the only notable highlight of a subdued second half.

Manager Derek Townsley said: “Credit where credit is due but, at the same time, we kind of helped them. We sat off them and let them play.

“Any team given the amount of space and time are going to look a good side.

“I know we keep talking about starting games brighter but we didn’t do that today. Credit to the boys, they did dragged themselves back into it. Then, to concede on half-time was a sucker punch. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb.

“The next goal was going to be crucial. Unfortunately, in the second half we were miles off.

“I take full responsibility for that. I am hurting and I am embarrassed. We will just have to pick ourselves up and go again.

“We are very much in the right half of the table, but that doesn’t hide from the disappointment of today.”

However, Reds do remain in the fifth and final play-off position in the table on 30 points, nine points off leaders Blyth Spartans.

The West Cumbrians have a game on Tuesday to give themselves a chance to bounce back.

They play away at Cumrbrian rivals Whitehaven in the County Cup.
