Workington Reds boss Dave Hewson praised his on-debut teenager Jack Egan for his efforts in Tuesday night's victory.

Reds travelled to Ashton United on Tuesday and came up trumps with a 1-0 victory to boost confidence, thanks to a Scott Allison goal.

And the on-loan youngster from Carlisle United was thrown in at the deep end and made an encouraging debut.

“He played exactly as I thought he would after talking to Darren Edmondson about him," said Hewson.

"He is busy and never stopped working, just probably a shame he never go the chance to show his ability in attacking position.

“To come in for your debut and play like that was terrific and I think his enthusiastic style is infectious."

Winger, Egan, has joined on an initial one-month loan to help cover in the absence of Jack Ryan and Rob Wilson in the Reds attacking line.

The move was accompanied by a further month at Reds for midfielder Jordan Holt, who has already spent a four-week spell in West Cumbria.

And Workington's hectic start to the season continues this weekend as they go on the road again, this time to Halesowen.

The Birmingham side lost 1-0 at fellow strugglers Stalybridge midweek to stay bottom of the league.

But Hewson is determined to concentrate on his own side and build up the consistency.

"I think it’s important that we build on this first away win," said Hewson.

"The lads have shown what they are capable of and we need to follow-up at the weekend."

The two sides have already met this term in the season opener at Borough Park when Reds came up trumps in a 3-1 victory.

It was a convincing performance from Workington as they had racked up a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes with goals from Jack Ryan, Scott Allison and Sam Smith.
