Workington Reds defender Jake Simpson believes his side are more than capable of continuing their winning streak against Skelmersdale tonight.

Reds recorded just their third win in the league on Saturday against Grantham and travel to the Lancashire club for a 7.45pm kick-off.

Dave Symington’s penalty gave the Borough Park outfit a much-needed three points and halted their six-match winless run.

A victory tonight could propel Derek Townsley’s side into the top half of the table and would increase their points tally to 14.

Simpson said: “Wins are always nice to get. It was a good performance on Saturday. We were solid at the back and Dave stepped up and put the penalty away.

“Our mentality was always there but it was just quality on the pitch that was letting us down. We know we’ve got the quality to win games and hopefully we can turn that into a winning run now.”

Long-term absentees Gari Rowntree and Anthony Wright will miss the game and Josh Calvert is doubtful with a hamstring injury.

Opponents Skelmersdale United are sitting in the bottom four having lost to Sutton Coldfield on Saturday. They’ve picked up seven points from their first eight games with four draws and just one win so far in the league this term.

Reds lost 2-1 against Skelmersdale in the corresponding fixture 12 months ago, but won the reverse game 2-1 at home.

Simpson added: “We know it’s going to be a tough and physical match. They will be up for it and will want to win by any means.

“The three points is the main thing. There’s not much difference in preparation for an away than there is for a home game.

“Hopefully, we can improve again tonight.”
