Workington Reds defender Jake Simpson says he is determined to help his side challenge again after agreeing a new deal with the club.

The right-back is one of three players from last season’s squad to have committed to the side for the 2016/17 season.

Conor Tinnion and Scott Allison have also agreed new contracts and goalkeeper Aaran Taylor has rejoined Reds.

Simpson said: “Towards the end of last season Derek Townsley said he was keen for me to commit to the club and that he wanted me to be a part of it.

“The club has a great set of lads. Workington is a proper non-league club with a group of lads who want to play.

“I’m really pleased. I want to be a part of Workington and we’re determined to go into the season feeling nice and positive and to come out at the right end of the table.”

The 25-year-old was a key player for Townsley’s side last season and claimed an assist in the play-off final defeat at Salford.

Simpson played in 59 matches in all competitions last term and chipped in with three goals and 14 assists.

Reds’ pre-season fixtures get under way in just under a month when they take on Whitehaven.

He added: “It would be massive to get promoted, but there’s a long road ahead before then.

“That was our goal last season and the season before but we were pipped at the post.

“It’s always exciting turning up on the first day of pre-season especially knowing that you’re part of a project. If we keep adding to the squad and strengthening in all departments we will be competitive and hopefully be able to go one step further.”

Fans are being invited to Borough Park tomorrow to watch England’s opening Euro 2016 match against Russia. Admission is free and kick off is at 8pm.
