RETIRING defender Kyle May wants to bow out in style tomorrow - by helping Workington Reds into the Evo-Stik premier division play-offs.

The 33-year-old will play his final match at Borough Park as Reds take on Buxton in a make-or-break final league fixture, ko 3pm.

After 12 years at the club, May will hang up his boots at the end of the season but insists tomorrow’s focus has to be on the team getting a win.

Reds must win tomorrow to stand any chance of making the play-offs and they are also reliant on results from Ashton United and Stourbridge, who were due to play last night.

May said: “There’s a lot going on on Saturday with a chance to get into the play-offs and my last game at Borough Park.

“It will be a strange and emotional afternoon. I’ve spent a lot of time here and a lot of good things have happened.

“I just want to enjoy my last game. I’ve enjoyed all my time here and hopefully we’ll get in the play-offs. It’s a must win game and winning is all we can do.”

During last Saturday’s crucial away win over play-off rivals Ashton United, Reds fans showed their support for the veteran defender by wearing Superman outfits and masks with May’s face on them and carried him off the field.

He added: “It hit home last Saturday and I was taken aback by what the fans did.

“But we’ve got to make sure that whatever happens on the pitch comes first.

“I would like to thank the fans for all their support over the years and it means a lot. They have made my time here very enjoyable.

"I’ve got some great memories for the rest of my life that I’ll never forget. I can’t thank them enough."

The veteran defender joined Reds in 2004 from Gretna and made his 500th appearance against Mickleover Sports last month.

He played for Reds during their years in the Conference North and was a regular fixture in the team last year when they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion.

May announced his intention to retire from football in February after Reds' 1-0 over Marine.

But for this weekend his attentions are firmly on Buxton.

He added: "Buxton haven't got a lot to play for and it could go one of two ways. I've been in situations on the last day where teams have had it all to play for.

"We can't expect them to lie down.

"It will be disappointing if we don't make the play-offs, but we've had a good season no matter what.

"We've had a lot to contend with and on the whole we've been good."

Manager Derek Townsley will have to make do without captain Gari Rowntree, Rob McCartney and long-term absentees Phil McLuckie and James Earl. But defender Anthony Wright is hoping to feature.
