Workington Reds joint manager Lee Andrews is thrilled that the club have managed to secure the services of Elliot Newby until the end of January.

The midfielder joined Reds from Barrow last month on an initial one month loan, but that deal has now been extended.

The 20-year-old has yet to feature for his parent club who are on an impressive unbeaten run in the National League.

Newby scored the first of his three goals so far against Matlock Town on his debut and has also contributed two assists.

Last season’s beaten play-off finalists have also seen an upturn in fortunes with three straight wins and clean sheets in all competitions.

Andrews said: “We’ve been impressed with his overall workrate and attitude and he’s solid in the squad.

“He’s played every game and gets goals. With Conor Tinnion in a more central role, he gives us width as well.

“He came to get games and he’s come in and done well. It’s important that he’s playing every week for himself.”

Elliot’s twin brother Alex also had a loan spell at Borough Park under Gavin Skelton during the 2014/15 season and had his initial one-month loan deal extended twice.

The Barrow-born midfielder joined his hometown club after leaving the youth set-up at Bolton Wanderers.

Elliot was offered a new deal by manager Paul Cox during the summer, but Alex was released by the Holker Street outfit.

Elliot was also on target during Reds’ 4-0 victory over Marine and the 4-1 reverse at Spennymoor.

Reds have won six and drawn one of their 11 games where Newby has featured.

Andrews added: “He’s an important player for us. Our aim is for him to keep doing what he’s been doing.

“It’s nice that Barrow have helped us out as it works two ways.

“It’s important that we look after Elliot while he’s here so he tells Barrow manager Paul Cox that we’ve looked after him.

“Alex was a decent player as well and maybe he helped to make up Elliot’s mind.”

Newby is hoping to be in the frame for selection for Reds’ next match which is against Ilkeston tomorrow.

The club is getting near to having a full squad to choose from after an injury-hit start.

Gari Rowntree played 67 minutes on Saturday and Joe McGee returned to the fray off the bench. And with Anthony Wright also verging on a comeback, the squad is looking healthier.

Although manager Derek Townsley admitted it was unfortunate that some players will miss out.

“We are at that stage now where we are going to have one or two lads who are going to be disappointed.

“But from our point of view it’s a nice problem to have, given the spate of injuries and the rest of the things we’ve had to deal with since the beginning of the season.”

Workington’s Integro League Cup tie against Ramsbottom United, cancelled this week to accommodate the latter’s FA Trophy match, will now be played at Borough Park on Tuesday, November 29, kick-off 7.45pm.
