Midfielder Anthony Wright insists no-one is panicking at Workington Reds after a tough beginning to the season.

Reds slipped to their first defeat on Tuesday night after a 2-0 loss at Skelmersdale United.

The West Cumbrians have picked up just one point in their opening two games following a 1-1 draw at home to Sutton Coldfield Town on Saturday.

However, Workington made a poor start to the last campaign when they lost three of their four opening league games, but they still went on to finish as runners-up with the most wins in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

Wright, 29, who is in his 10th season with Reds, said: “I don’t think we have played badly. On Tuesday, we came up against a really good team. We had the chances to score, unfortunately their keeper has made some big saves.

“It’s two games but we are not panicking. We just have to keep on going. We are creating chances and they will eventually go in.

“We’ve only played two games, there is no need to get disheartened.

“In the second half against Skelmersdale we played really well and made some good chances, unfortunately we came up against a keeper in form. We go on to the next game.”

Wright, who lives in Wigton, has been deployed in his preferred central-midfield position so far this season and he is hoping he can cement his place in the side.

“I have had a good pre-season,” he said.

“I haven’t had any injuries. I just want to keep on getting games.”

Workington will be looking to pick up their first three points of the season when they travel to Stourbridge on Saturday.
