Workington Reds' Dave Hewson was full of praise for the two goalscorers after his side ran out 2-0 winners against play-off rivals Buxton.

Dave Symington and Josh Calvert secured the victory with fine strikes to help their side up to eighth in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

And Hewson was proud of his team’s performance which moves them closer to a third successive shot at the play-offs.

He said: “Dave Symington has got that in his locker. He’s got so much quality.

"He’s scored some great goals with both feet. I felt second half he couldn’t get into the game but it wasn’t through any fault of his own.

“I’m really pleased for him after getting left out on Saturday. He put in a great shift.”

And Calvert, who came into replace the injured Rob Wilson, wrapped up the win after Buxton’s Liam Hardy was shown the red card.

Hewson said: “I’ve praised Josh so many times this season, thought his work rate and endeavour all around the park was great today. All credit to him for busting his gut.

“I think it was a scrappy game, they came with a game plan to not get beat.

"I felt we were on the front foot all over the park, I thought our work rate was absolutely magnificent. We had a game plan and we stuck to it.

“Some of the changes we made paid off, a 2-0 result is absolutely fantastic.”

Rob Wilson missed out after picking up a knock in the warm-up and Hewson confirmed it was a recurrence of an ankle injury.

Workington next face Halesowen on Saturday and Nantwich Town on Monday as they look to gain promotion to the Conference North.
