Workington Reds Reserves have been rewarded for all their hard work behind the scenes.

The club received an unexpected trophy at the Lancashire League AGM – the inaugural Club of the Year award.

The recognition was for off-field expertise rather than their prowess on the pitch, although the Reserves did finish runner-up to champions, Colne.

Administration, hospitality and fair play are some of the qualities the League looked for in making their selection with Reds coming top of a lengthy shortlist.

Reds director, Steve Durham, said: "It was a surprise because we didn't know anything about it until we got there.

"But it is an award for how we operate and have done over the last few years.

"It is a pat on the back for all the volunteers who help us get a Reserves game on. It was a nice accolade for the club.

League chairman, Neil Marsdin, made the presentation to Steve Durham.

Reds Reserves will meet fresh opposition in what will be their 14th season in the Lancashire League after Charnock Richard FC became one of five newcomers elected. The two clubs have never previously met.

Reds will again play in the West Division alongside AFC Darwen, AFC Fylde, Ashton Athletic, Bamber Bridge, Charnock Richard, Chorley, Colne and Padiham (tbc).

The League season will commence on August 15.
