Reds boss Dave Hewson admitted getting three points against Hednesford Town was more important than the manner of the win.

Reds fought hard for their 1-0 victory at Borough Park, a result that lifted them to 12th in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

It wasn’t the fancy footwork that was on display last Tuesday night, but Hewson spoke of his pride at how his players stuck in to get the win.

“I think if we asked anyone before the game if we would have took a scrappy 1-0 win and another three points, we would have grabbed your hand off,” said Hewson.

“I understand people’s frustration but we’ve got to stay positive. It’s a tough ask and every game brings different challenges.

“Earlier this season, I don’t think we would have seen that through and that might have been a draw or a defeat.

“So you’ve got to give them credit.

"Yes, we didn’t play well enough with the ball, we didn’t keep it well enough in the second half. And we didn’t move it like we did the other night but we’ve dug in and our keeper has pulled off a fantastic save at the end to win us the game.”

Conor Tinnion scored the only goal of the game with a volley towards the end of the first half.

But the hero of the hour was Reds’ keeper Aaran Taylor who pulled off several saves to keep them in the game.

“That’s why he’s here,” added Hewson. “For me he’s the best local keeper, he’s the best keeper in this region.

"He’s so important to us and he proves it week, in week out.

“He’s very humble and he’ll say that’s what he’s there to do but he was very, very important for us, and it’s a crucial three points and back-to-back victories, which is what people want.

“It wasn’t the football that everyone wants to see but results are more important.”

Reds now have a very quick turnaround as they head to Shaw Lane tonight and Hewson is confident they can carry their form into the game.

“We stay confident, positive and behind the team 100 per cent,” said the boss.
