Workington boss Derek Townsley has hailed the return to goal-scoring form of Saturday’s match-winner Gareth Arnison.

Reds had to twice come from behind to beat promotion-chasing rivals Ilkeston 3-2 at Borough Park with substitute Arnison adding two more to his impressive tally for the club.

Introduced on 72 minutes with his side trailing 2-1, Arnison grabbed the equaliser four minutes later from the penalty spot. Then in the second minute of the five added on at the end he steered in a clinical finish to win the three points.

Townsley said: “We all know what Arnie is capable of as far as goals are concerned and with his problems this season it’s great to see him knocking them in again.

“He came on and scored with his first touch at Frickley last week and then, looking particularly sharp, gets two in the last 15 minutes to win the game on Saturday.”

Arnison’s return to the goal trail is particularly welcome as Matty Tymon is likely to be out of action for a month with a cracked bone in his ankle, and Workington did not replace Alex Salmon when he left early in the season.

With Arnison looking capable of adding to his tally of over 100 goals for the club, the Reds management team couldn’t be happier but they are still hoping to add to their potential fire-power this week.

A north-west based striker was at Borough Park on Saturday to watch the game with Ilkeston and is considering his options after being released by his current club.

The Reds manager is hoping that there will be a positive response from the player before the next game, which is Buxton away on Saturday.

Townsley and co did add to the squad before Saturday’s clash with former Morecambe and Kendal midfielder Rob Wilson coming in and getting the last half an hour.

“We’ve known about Rob for a while with Dave Hewson knowing him well. We feel he can fit in for us at the club. He’s two footed, likes to pass the ball, is creative and plays the way we want him to. It’s not easy coming on for a new team without knowing people but I thought he did well,” said Townsley.

Reds don’t have a game on Tuesday now as their scheduled Dootson Sports League Cup opponents Clitheroe are involved in a Lancashire County Cup game, which takes preference.

If they lose that tie Clitheroe will visit Borough Park on Tuesday, December 8 but if they win, the trip to Workington will be put back until the New Year.
