Workington Reds cruised to a 6-0 win at Gretna on Friday night as they continued a confident build-up to the new season.

A brace apiece from strikers Tom Kiliffin and Scott Allison laid the base for another good performance, a month before the start of the Evo Stik Premier League.

Reds have won three of their four friendlies so far, scoring 14 goals, and the only defeat was a 3-1 reversal against Carlisle United but after a promising effort.

Kiliffin sored twice in the first-half to give Reds the advantage at the break and then strike partner Allison took over with his two goals. Connor Tinnion got in on the act before young reserve Lewis Jolly added the sixth six minutes from the end.

Reds included Matthew Douglas, a young centre-half released by Carlisle United who has been on trial with Hartlepool, but nothing came of it.

Workington director Steve Durham said: “He didn’t know anybody but grew in confidence and did well, playing for the full 90 minutes. He had Josh Calvert alongside first half and Kyle May in the second.

“It was also good to see Phil McLuckie back in a red short. It was his first game for five months after breaking his jaw at Ramsbottom and he also had the full 90 minutes.”

Reds management trio used 17 players on the night with five of the reserve youngsters coming on for the final quarter of the game.

“The only downside was that we had two players, Tom Kiliffin and Rob Wilson, who limped off before half-time after taking knocks,” said Durham.

Reds resume their pre-season programme on Tuesday when they visit Northern League neighbours Penrith before getting back to Borough Park next Saturday against West Auckland.
