“He was magnificent and looked as though he had never been away,” he said after Workington’s 10th away win of the season.
“We know his leadership qualities and he won every header and tackle, and epitomised the spirit in the camp.
"Those qualities were there before he left and are still there now.”
Hewson had to go into the game without Kyle May (work) and Josh Calvert (injured) but was able to name Wordsworth and James Earl as their replacements.
It was a very professional and workmanlike performance against mid-table Barwell with the 2-0 win keeping Reds’ season in the melting pot.
“Our work rate, on a very hot day, was outstanding and we retained our discipline and organisation throughout,” added Hewson.
“We nullified their obvious talent, coped with what they threw at us and our dedication was rewarded with a well deserved clean sheet.”
A Rob Wilson penalty had given Reds an early lead with Jack Ryan doubling the advantage with a well taken goal soon after.
The win sets up a crucial meeting with fifth placed Buxton at Borough Park tomorrow (7.45pm kick-off). Buxton are expected to include former Reds’ favourite Joe McGee.
