Workington Reds joint-manager Lee Andrews believes the newly re-signed Dave Symington will only get better next season.

Symington signed a new deal at the weekend to remain with Reds as they take another tilt at promotion from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

Andrews admitted last year had been a learning curve for the former Carlisle United youngster but says he has bags of potential.

“Last season he was our top scorer but he offers a lot more than just that,” said Andrews.

“The creative side to his game is there for all to see. He can change a game on his own with the quality he has.

“And a big bonus is that he is still young. Last year was a big learning curve for him.

“We all know what he can do with the ball at his feet but the defensive side of his game has really improved as well.

“Next season, if he hits the ground running, we will see big things.”

Symington was Reds’ top- scorer last season, just pipping striker Scott Allison to the post in the final game.

He racked up 15 goals to Allison’s 14 and Andrews says that friendly rivalry is a bonus.

He added: “It is right throughout the squad. Players put pressure on others for places and that brings the best out of everyone.”

Reds will go back into pre-season training towards the end of this month when Andrews and joint-manager Dave Hewson will look at their squad.

They have been busy snapping up some familiar faces from last year as they hope to be better prepared for the season.

And some new faces will also be invited along as they look to get a strong and balanced side for the start of the league season in August.

“We are always looking to add to the squad with more quality,” added Andrews.

“There were players we identified back at Christmas who we knew would be out of contract in the summer and we want to look at.

“Other players have been released and contacted us since or we have identified them and we want to bring them down to training and see how they fit in.”
