It is back to the drawing board for Workington Reds, according to manager Derek Townsley, after they missed out on signing two players this week.

Townsley revealed earlier this week that he had made offers to two players who were playing at a higher level than Reds last season.

However, his transfer plans have been scuppered after finding out that both players won’t be joining the west Cumbrians for the coming season.

Midfielder Liam Tomsett, who played for Flyde last season in the Conference North, has decided not to join Reds, while striker Lewis Guy has opted to join Chorley.

Townsley said: “It’s a shame. Lewis would have helped us but never mind. It’s probably a good move for Lewis but it’s disappointing for us.

“It’s back to the drawing board. We are up against it. There are other teams that can offer more in terms of finance.

“We will just keeping looking. Hopefully someone comes available.”

Workington have three pre-season games left before the start of the Evo-Stik Premier Division season at home to Sutton Coldfield Town on August 15.

Reds face Consett away tomorrow (3pm ko) and then travel to Kendal Town on Tuesday and Lancaster City the following Saturday.
