Workington Reds had the perfect tonic for tomorrow night’s “massive” clash with Spennymoor when they won again at the weekend.

A 2-0 victory at Ilkeston was Reds’ third successive victory in the Evo Stik Premier League and also the fourth game in a row in which they have kept a clean sheet.

General manager Derek Townsley said: “We are going nicely at the moment, even though we weren’t at our best against Ilkeston. Three wins in a row have lifted us into the top half of the table and we are closing in on where we want to be.

“Obviously Tuesday’s game with Spennymoor is a massive one for both teams. We remember losing 4-1 over there last month so we would like to put that straight at Borough Park.”

Workington are ninth, just two places and two points behinds the Moors who lost 1-0 on Saturday at Nantwich – who currently divide tomorrow night’s protagonists.

Reds had Dave Symington sent-off at Spennymoor, a red card which changed the game as the Cumbrians had levelled three minutes before the dismissal.

The former Carlisle United pro has missed the three match winning sequence as he served his ban and ironically comes back into the reckoning – against the Moors.

Whatever happens tomorrow Reds will have to make a change on Saturday, for another testing fixture at Stourbridge. James Earl was shown his fifth yellow card of the season at Ilkeston which means he will automatically serve a one-match ban.

“That’s why we brought off Conor Tinnion as a precaution at Ilkeston. Conor has had four bookings and if he received another he would also have missed the Stourbridge trip. You’ve got to think ahead sometimes,” said Townsley.

Workington are now just four points off the play-off places and are just four games away from the half-way point of the campaign.

“I think if we are up there with them at Christmas that’s where we would want to be for a big push over the second-half of the season. We are almost back to a full squad of players with competition for places and that has to be good for everybody,” said Townsley.
