All's well that ends well and Workington came good after a rather uninspiring start in North Wales to bring back three points.

Matty Tymon, with his first goal of the season, and another super strike from Conor Tinnion gave Reds their first away win on Tuesday.

Despite the long trip to North Wales, Workington only had to make one change, although they were only able to field four substitutes.

Tymon replaced Alex Salmon in attack as the Reds looked to follow up their 5-0 win in the FA Cup with victory in the league.

Colwyn Bay, who had drawn 1-1 at Matlock on Saturday, introduced three new signings – goalkeeper Russell Griffiths (on loan from Everton), defender Mike Brewster (on loan from Southport) and winger Glenn Matthews (signed from AFC Telford).

Workington had an early escape in the third minute when John Marsden got in behind Gari Rowntree and a low pull back presented new boy Matthews with a chance but his first-time shot was kicked off the line by Alex Mitchell.

Reds responded with a good break down the right but with Tymon well placed in the middle, Joe McGee put his cross behind the goal.

Mitchell did well again, stretching to punch away a dangerous cross and Marsden was just over the top with a header.

Colwyn Bay came again and after a good run from Chris Sharp, a shot from Marsden was well held by Mitchell.

Reds were being forced onto the back foot and when they did make inroads, the final ball was too often wayward.

McGee had Workington’s first serious shot in anger but new keeper Russell Griffiths had no trouble in collecting.

Workington had been unable to settle into their passing rhythm, continuing to give the ball away and after a lively start, Colwyn Bay had struggled as well. It had become a scrappy contest.

But on 40 minutes Workington took the lead. Tymon came sliding in on the six-yard box to knock home Gari Rowntree’s drilled low cross. Rowntree had linked well with Tinnion before providing the assist.

It seemed to lift the Reds as they came back quickly and keeper Griffith had to rush from goal to beat McGee to the ball and hammer into touch.

Colwyn Bay made two changes at half-time with Kevin Holsgrove replacing debutant Matthews and Carl Rogers coming on for Archie Love.

Marsden earned a reprimand from the referee after protesting when he didn’t give a foul against Kyle May and the home side appeared to lose their early dash.

Reds had the ball in the net after 52 minutes when Jake Simpson sent McGee away down the right and Tymon knocked in his low cross. But the flag had already been raised for offside.

There was a big scramble in the Reds box following a corner but eventually Anthony Wight hammered it clear, and soon afterwards Colwyn Bay made their third change when Corey Williams took over from Brewster.

A good free-kick whipped in by Simpson was cleared but left Tymon and Rob Hopley on the ground after a clash of heads, but both were able to continue.

Colwyn Bay had a free-kick in a dangerous area on 71 minutes but Rogers headed well over the bar and immediately Workington made their first substitution when Gareth Arnison replaced Scott Allison.

Reds had the ball in the net again on 75 minutes through Tinnion, but once more the flag had been raised seconds earlier for offside.

Workington were forced into a second change a minute later when Josh Calvert limped off to be replaced by Sam Smith.

Reds could have doubled their lead on 78 minutes but McGee flicked a Simpson corner into Griffith’s arm.

At the other end, Rowntree was booked for a foul and when the free-kick went right across goal, Holsgrove fired high, wide and not so very handsome.

Then Workington did double their lead on 83 minutes with another fine goal from Tinnion. McGee cut in from the right and although his cross was headed clear, Tinnion was steaming in to fire a fierce left footer into the bottom corner from 30 yards.

There was an injury scare for Reds when Mitchell seemed to twist his ankle diving over a home forward to grab the ball, but he was able to resume after treatment.

Four minute of added time offered little hope for Colwyn Bay and during that time Reds brought on McCartney for McGee.

And so after a slow start, Reds had finally eased home.
