The games are coming thick and fast for Workington Reds and defender Sam Smith says the players can’t wait to put Tuesday’s loss behind them.

Reds suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Skelmersdale on Tuesday night, which means they have picked up just one point from their opening two games.

But Derek Townsley’s men have the opportunity to kick-start their season today when they travel to the West Midlands to take on Stourbridge (3pm ko).

They will then host newly-promoted Darlington 1883, one of the bookies’ favourites to win the title, on Tuesday night (7.45pm ko).

Smith, 22, who has played at centre-back for the first two games, believes that having a game to play straight after a loss is the best medicine for players.

He said: “After losing a game you just want the next one to come round quickly so you can put it right. You just want the games to come thick and fast.

“It’s early days and it’s a long season – 46 games.”

Seaton youngster Smith has been deployed alongside veteran Kyle May in central defence so far this season.

He knows he faces stiff competition at centre-back, something he relishes, with Josh Calvert waiting in the wings for his chance.

Smith said: “I was happy with how my pre-season has gone.

“I have done enough to be awarded a place in the team. I played left and right-back last season. I try my best wherever I play across the back four.

“Kyle is a great player and everyone saw how good Josh was last year. Competition gets the best out of you. I must be doing something right to be starting.”
