A DELIGHTED Derek Townsley praised his Workington Reds side after they pulled off a superb 2-0 victory over table-topping Blyth.

A superb strike from Jake Simpson broke the deadlock late in the second half and put Reds into the ascendency and they never looked back.

He praised Simpson, saying: “We know he strikes a good ball and to his credit made a good connection and it flew in.

“Credit to him it was a good strike and the urgency was there, worthy of winning any game.”

Workington, who closed the gap at the top of the table to five points, looked the better side for the majority of the game and Townsley added: “It wasn’t a great night.

“Credit to those who worked on the pitch during the day. But we knew it was going to cut up.

“We had to roll our sleeves up but the lads showed urgency. From our point of view, they only had one shot on goal and we were pleased with a clean sheet.

“I think we were deserved winners. I thought we were clearly the better side and our attitude was first class.

“It sends a message to other teams that we are not here to make up the numbers.”

Now Townsley will turn his attention to Saturday and the visit of Marine.

He added: “We will bring the lads back down to earth at training and there are another three points on offer on Saturday.

“We have some momentum now.

“Coming to the business end of the season we need to keep on picking up points.

“Things are very much onwards and upwards.”
