Workington Reds midfielder Anthony Wright is targeting a return to first team action in November after missing the start of the season through injury.

Wright will have a double hernia operation on Tuesday in a bid to sort out the groin injury which affected him last season.

He will be able to return home following the operation and can start activities such as running a few days after.

Wright, who has seen a specialist, hopes to be back in light training in about three to four weeks.

He said: "It's really frustrating not being able to play at the start of the season.

"It's hard being on the sideline watching, but the lads have done reasonably well.

"We're playing well, but we just need to get a run of games going.

"I can't wait to get back. Last season was so frustrating for me with the groin injury that I had.

"I was not 100 per cent and if I had been I could have done so much more in the play-off final.

Wright's last appearance for Reds came in the Cumberland Cup victory over Aspatria.

He missed the whole of pre-season, but did play the full 90 minutes against Salford back in April.

Wright also revealed that he has been converted to a central midfield player, but will fill in at the back if needed.

He added: "I can't wait to be fully fit. We've got a good team and squad and I want to be a part of it.

"In the last three seasons we've got off to a really bad start and haven't got going and this one is no different.

"I've got no doubt that we'll start winning games."

Reds are next in action tomorrow when they take on Shildon in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Wright, Gari Rowntree and Kyle May will miss the tie which could bring £4,500 in prize money to the club if they win.

Shildon play in the Northern League Division One, effectively the ninth tier, and are in fourth place.
