Workington Reds stepped up their promotion push by sweeping aside a sterile Halesowen Town side.

Goals from Sam Smith, Gareth Arnison and Conor Tinnion gave the home side a resounding victory in front of their own supporters.

The hosts had the better of the early exchanges and moved through the gears as the first half went on.

Phil McLuckie had the first attempt at goal, but his effort from distance failed to trouble Shaun Rowley in the Halesowen goal.

Arnison and Tinnion tormented the men in blue too and the home side restricted the visitors to just one effort on goal in the first period which came from Jean Michel Gueyes from 25 yards.

The Reds moved the ball forward well and their first clear cut chance fell to Tinnion on 16 minutes who latched on to McLuckie’s flick on, but was unable to guide his shot into the net.

Moments later Gareth Arnison was played in by Jake Simpson, but the man who scored twice in midweek saw his effort deflected behind.

But the home side didn’t have to wait long for their first goal and it came on 19 minutes when Simpson’s cross was diverted in by Sam Smith to put them 1-0 up.

Arnison wouldn’t be denied his third goal in two games and it came on 26 minutes when he latched onto Joe McGee’s through ball to slot it home for 2-0.

The Reds were simply unstoppable and at times it was like watching defence versus attack on the training ground.

Gari Rowntree tried his luck from range with just over half an hour gone, the lively Tinnion had an effort deflected behind and James Earl’s 30-yard piledriver slipped through Rowley’s grasp and behind as the half-time whistle approached.

Tinnion had another effort tipped wide just before the interval and the half-time score of 2-0 should and could have easily been higher.

Ground staff came out at half-time with rollers to try and level the playing surface, but the hosts were anything but flat themselves as the second half began. Halesowen threw on Ashley Parson-Smith just before the start of the second period, but the Yeltz were restricted to long balls which the Reds dealt with easily.

Clearly in the mood for more goals Arnison kept putting himself in good positions, but his volley just before the hour mark ended up in orbit.

With the win all but secure, Derek Townsley brought on Kinglsey Grandison for Joe McGee which the manager later admitted was a precautionary measure.

With a quarter of an hour left Smith, Kyle May and Arnison all tried to add to the goal tally in some penalty box pinball, but a third goal wasn’t far away.

Townsley also threw on Rob Wilson in place of Anthony Wright and the substitute made an almost instant impact by laying the ball off for Tinnion who made absolutely sure of the points by slotting home.

Rob McCartney also made a brief cameo at the end, replacing Phil McLuckie and there was one late chance for the visitors.

A well-worked move saw the ball worked to Daniel Bragoli, but his curling effort went past the post right on full-time.

It was a one-sided contest at Borough Park and the Reds made it four straight wins in all competitions.
