Striker Matty Tymon believes Workington Reds are capable of replicating Blyth Spartans’ FA Cup heroics from last season.

Reds continue their FA Cup campaign today with a tough home match against high-flying Harrogate Town (3pm ko) in the second qualifying round.

The Yorkshire side are fourth in the National League North, the division above Workington, and have won their last four matches against Reds.

Reds banked £3,000 in FA Cup prize money after hammering Colwyn Bay 5-0 in the previous round and the winner of today’s tie will secure £4,500.

Tymon, who got off the mark for the season in a 2-0 away at Colwyn Bay on Tuesday, believes Workington has every chance of going on a similar run to that of Blyth Spartans last season.

The Spartans, who are in the same league as Reds, reaped massive financial rewards on their cup run as they reached the third round proper, where they lost to Birmingham.

Tymon, 25, said: “Everyone playing in the lower leagues dreams of being in the FA Cup first round proper.

“We played Blyth last year in the league and there wasn’t much difference between us and them. I can’t see why we can’t do it.

“Harrogate are doing well in the league above but I think we would fancy our chances against anyone at home.”

Tymon has had to bide his time for chances in the starting 11 this season but was glad to get off the mark on Tuesday.

The management team has tinkered with his forward line on several occasions this season, including playing winger Scott Allison as the main striker.

“I am just glad to be back playing and scoring,” Tymon said. “But the most important thing was the three points.

“Scotty has done really well. You just have to sit tight and hope you get a chance.

“My target is to just get a run in the team and a run of goals. With strikers, once you get one goal, a couple tend to come along.”

Defender Josh Calvert, who picked up a hamstring injury on Tuesday, will be assessed before today’s match.

Meanwhile, Workington Reds Ladies will also be in action tomorrow when they host CMB Ladies in the league at Borough Park (2pm ko).
