Workington Reds moved up to second in the Evo Stik Premier League after a superb 4-0 victory at Hyde last night.

Reds manager Derek Townsley admitted he hadn’t seen that result coming after half an hour.

The Cumbrians had been second best for almost the entire opening 30 minutes before they found their rhythm and two goals before half-time set them on their way.

Townsley said: “It certainly wasn’t in the game plan to start like that. They are a young side and they passed it around well but we changed things round, went 4-4-2 and thankfully it worked out well for us.

“We started to knock it around ourselves and once we got in front I thought we bossed the game and did well.

“We got four excellent goals in total and were good winners in the end.

“It’s been a good weekend with six points and we are up to second in the table, which is a great place to be.

“Now we have to prepare for Mickleover on Saturday and aim to keep our run going. No games are easy though.”

The win came courtesy of goals from Kyle May, James Earl, Gareth Arnison and Phil McLuckie.

Reds are second behind Blyth and just ahead of Salford, who meet tonight in the north east.

Workington will have the game covered, knowing they meet both in the next fortnight.
