Workington Reds completed a 3-1 victory over pre-season opponents Carlisle City with a superb goal from one of their up and coming youngsters.

Ryley Short, who plays for Reds Reserve side, came on as a sub in the second half of last night's clash and had a big impact.

He struck a lovely hooked volley from am acute angle from 20-yards out to seal the win on 85 minutes.

Earlier in the game, a long clearance from Reds keeper Aaran Taylor put his side on the attack.

Scott Allison dispossessed City's Tyran Taylor and he rolled it home from just inside the box.

Reds doubled their lead just before half time when Conor Tinnion scored with a good left foot drive from 25-yards out and the keeper stood no chance.

Part of the way through the second half Reds bosses used the game to bring on a number of their younger Reserves players to give them a run out.

City did pull a goal back through Ryan Errington, who was their danger man on the night.

He cut in from the left hand side and finished well across Reds' substitute keeper Tom Fowler.

But then came Short's strike with five minutes of time remaining to seal the win.

Reds director Steve Durham said: "It was a comfortable win and a good workout. We used 18 players which was good to see.

"It was good for the first team and also for the reserves. And a wonderful goal at the end for Ryley Short, whose brother Ellis was also playing."

Reds will now turn their focus to Friday night when they take on Gretna.
