Workington Reds captain Gari Rowntree has heaped praise on flying winger Conor Tinnion after he netted another wonder goal against Colwyn Bay.

Tinnion helped seal Workington’s first three points on the road this season with a 30-yard strike to make it 2-0 in North Wales on Tuesday.

Last season’s Players’ Player of the Year has been in red hot form in front of goal so far this campaign. The Cockermouth-based winger hit a stunning equaliser against Barwell on Saturday and his double helped down Darlington 1883 last month.

Left-back Rowntree was full of praise for his in-form teammate. He said: “It was another great strike against Colwyn Bay.

“Every week he is the same. He is one of our best players. He does it every week.

“He seems to be flying at the moment, which is good for us.”

Tuesday’s victory lifted Reds up to eighth in the Evo-Stik Premier Division on 16 points, two points off the fifth and final play-off place, and just four points behind leaders Nantwich Town.

Rowntree added: “It was very good and we played really well. We are playing well and there seems to be a lot of confidence. We just want to keep it up.

“It’s really tight in the league. There are only four points from us to the top.”

Workington have won five of their last eight games in all competitions, which has included four clean sheets.

Reds now have the joint-best defensive record in the league alongside Marine having only conceded eight goals in 10 matches.

The West Cumbrians will need to continue their defensive solidity on Saturday when they welcome National League North side Harrogate Town to Borough Park in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Harrogate are flying high in fourth position in the division above Reds.

“They have always been a difficult team to play against,” Rowntree said. “We think we can cause an upset because we are playing well.”
