Workington Reds will treat tonight’s local derby against Whitehaven as a chance to make amends for Saturday’s heavy defeat at home to Salford City, according to defender Sam Smith.

Reds will make the short journey down the west coast to face Whitehaven Amateurs Football Club in the third round of the Cumberland Cup (7.30pm kick-off).

And centre-back Smith is keen to use the game to get back to winning ways after they lost 4-1 to a classy Salford City in a league match at Borough Park.

He said: “We knew beforehand they were a good team. We know we are capable of a lot more, that was the most disappointing thing.

“We are disappointed but we have the county cup tonight and hopefully it’s a good chance to get back to winning ways. At least we have a chance to put it right.

“You always want a game straight away when you have just lost. It’s a good chance to get a result and it’s a competition we want to win.

“You can’t go into these games thinking you have a bye. Whitehaven have a good team, good lads and a good set up.”

Workington booked their place in the third round of the Cumberland Cup after hammering Westmorland Football League side Kirkoswald 7-1 away from home last month.

Whitehaven, who play in the Wearside Football League, earned a plum tie against Reds by beating Langwathby United 4-0 on their travels.
