Workington Reds defender Sam Smith is determined to help to fire his side into the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in nine years.

Reds travel to Matlock Town tomorrow in the third qualifying round and are just two wins away from the first round.

They have already seen off Warrington and Shildon in the cup this season and have banked £7,500 in prize money.

A victory against the Derbyshire side would bring in another £7,500 in prize money and a possible tie with a side from the National League.

Reds last played in round one of the competition back in 2007 and put on a brave display against League Two side Bury before going down 4-1.

Joint manager Dave Hewson and defenders Anthony Wright, Gari Rowntree and Kyle May all played for Reds at Gigg Lane that day.

Smith said: "You see upsets every year and Blyth, Salford and Warrington have done it and all been on great runs.

"Even when you're watching the cup on TV you see teams from League 1 or League 2 get quite far.

"It's great for English football and it shows that there is still positivity in the English game."

Reds returned to winning ways in the league against Grantham last weekend and also saw off Skelmersdale to move within three points of the top five.

Long term absentees Gari Rowntree and Anthony Wright are unlikely to figure at the weekend. The first team were due to train as normal last night.

Smith was an unused substitute during the club's run to the fourth qualifying round three years ago when they lost to Stourbridge.

The left back added: "It might be a little bit different tomorrow and we've been looking forward to it since we beat Shildon.

"I'm not going to say I'm disappointed with the tie because we could have had someone from the National League North or South.

"We know we're more than capable of winning, but we know it's never an easy game."

Kick off at Causeway Lane is at 3pm.

A quiz night will take place at the social club at Borough Park next Friday, October 7.

It is being put on by the Workington Reds Development Fund with quiz organiser Jimmy Walsh.

Entry is £2 and the quiz starts at 7pm. All money raised will go towards the club.
