Joe McGee could be set to start his first Workington Reds match this season when they welcome Barwell to Borough Park tomorrow, ko 3pm.

The attacking midfielder came through 30 minutes of Tuesday night’s clash unscathed and joint manager Dave Hewson is hoping he will be ready to join the starting XI.

He will be a straight replacement for Tom Kilifin, who will miss out due to work commitments.

“Joe played for 30 minutes without any reaction against Frickley so he is just preparing now to make sure he is ready for Saturday,” said Hewson.

“But we won’t make a final decision on him until the day.”

It was hoped that Sam Smith might make his return this week but Hewson believes it might be a game too soon for the defender.

He added: “He is just making sure that the injury is fully healed and we don’t make it any worse.

“Sam hasn’t done any training yet so we would like him to have at least one session under his belt before he is back involved.

“I think tomorrow’s game might just be a bit too early for him.”

Reds are hoping to make it three wins from three encounters tomorrow after opening wins at Rushall and then at home to Frickley on Tuesday night.

“It’s been great to follow up a difficult long journey last Saturday with two games at home,” said Hewson.

“Now I just hope we can start to play some of the football that we showcased last year.

“The results are the most important thing but I would like us to start playing some more of what we are capable of.

“But the results have been great so far and let’s hope we can get another win under our belts.”

Workington Reds will be holding a meet the managers night on Friday, September 2 at the ground. More details nearer the time.
