Striker Gareth Arnison has vowed to do his best to keep his place in Workington Reds’ team after bagging a double against Ramsbottom United.

Arnison, 28, made his first start of the season for Reds in a 4-0 victory over Ramsbottom at Borough Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Reds, who had only managed three goals in the previous five games, opted to start with Arnison after experimenting with different forward lines in the previous matches.

The comprehensive win against bottom-of-the-league Ramsbottom lifted Workington to 11th in the Evo-Stik Premier Division on eight points.

Arnison said: “It was a good game. Obviously it was my first start of the season and it was good to get in amongst the goals.

“I am just going to try to stay in the team and score goals. There is quite a bit of competition for places.

“They have tried a few different things, such as playing Scott Allison in the middle.

“I always think I can score goals and I was desperate to play.”

Monday’s match saw Arnison link up well with attacking midfielder Joe McGee as the pair caused problems for Ramsbottom throughout the encounter.

McGee scored the opener on 10 minutes and then set up winger Scott Allison for the second just three minutes later.

Arnison added: “Joe had a good game. We tried to just work well as a pair, that was our objective from the start. We tried to link up well.”

“Joe had a good shout for a penalty turned down near the end. It was more of a penalty than the first one.”

While Reds have yet to be beaten at Borough Park this season, they have so far stuttered on the road and are still without three points on their travels.

The West Cumbrians face a tough journey to 10th-placed Rushall Olympic on Saturday.

“It’s another long trip for the lads,” said Arnison. “Hopefully we can keep the confidence going from Monday and pick something up.”
