Workington Reds midfielder Rob Wilson was happier with the three points than his stunning late goal as his team made it back-to-back wins against Nantwich Town on Boxing Day.

His 86th-minute goal from what looked like an impossible angle gave Reds a two-goal cushion as they saw out the 3-1 win at Borough Park.

Wilson said: “It was all right, it wasn’t a bad strike.

“I’ve scored a couple of goals this season which is nice after I didn’t get as many as I’d have liked last year. The main thing was to get the three points.”

Derek Townsley’s Reds face a pair of crucial games against promotion hopefuls Blyth Spartans (Monday, 3pm ko) and Evo Stik Premier League leaders Rushall Olympic on January 7 and Wilson hopes their rejuvenated form can carry on into the new year.

“It’s good, we needed that win and it’s obviously two out of two now,” he said.

“We needed it for our confidence more than anything and I think the win at Corby last week gave us belief that we could go into that next game and do well. It’s massive and sets us up for these games.

“It’s been a bit stop-start this season for me just like the team really but we’re finding our feet and hopefully we can carry it on.”

Reds went down 2-0 at home to Blyth in August but stunned them at Croft Park to reach the play-offs final last season with a 3-4 win and will be hoping for more of the same as they aim to get back into the top five.

Reds boss Dave Hewson said: “You treat it like every other game but there’s always that little extra something about this game against Blyth because we’ve played them so many times.

“You can class it I guess as a little bit of a derby game and it’s always tough going away to Blyth.

“They’re a very good side and always have been.

“It was important following the three straight defeats to get back to winning ways and we’ve managed to do that with two good performances at home and away.

“We’ll just prepare right and treat it as with any other game.”

Goals from Dave Symington, Joe McGee and Jake Simpson have helped Reds on their way to back-to-back victories and Hewson believes the quality is there for every player in the team to chip in with more.

“It’s always important that everyone chips in because there’s going to be times when the strikers aren’t quite firing on all cylinders and they’ll be looking around for the rest of the team to help out,” he said.

“I think we’ve got the quality in the squad to get goals and it’s been good to see Rob Wilson adding that to his game because he’s got so much technical ability.”

Both McGee and Simpson left the field with knocks against Nantwich but Hewson said they would be given the chance to prove their fitness ahead of the Blyth match.
