Workington Reds hero Conor Tinnion sealed his side’s first three points of the season with a 25-yard wonder strike last night.

The winger’s stunning effort on 84 minutes was a goal worthy of winning any match and the Cockermouth man’s effort against Darlington 1883 will live long in the memory.

It was an open, feisty and end-to-end clash and the 684 people packed into the stadium certainly got value for money.

Reds, who just about edged the match in terms of possession and chances created, were staring at a third draw in their fourth league game of the season.

But Tinnion’s goal was just rewards for a committed and organised display.

Dave Hewson, assistant manager, said: “It was absolutely fantastic. I am just so pleased for the fans who came down to watch us.

“The boys, I just can’t fault their effort. Their determination and attitude was first class.

“I am just so pleased to get our first win. We won it with a wonder goal but it justifies our efforts. We can kick on from now and we go into Saturday full of confidence.

“Conor has that in his locker. He has a sweet left foot. No goalie in the world would have stopped that.”

Assistant managers Hewson and Lee Andrews, in charge in manager Derek Townsley’s absence, decided to start without a recognised striker. And the decision paid off as frontman Scott Allison and Joe McGee caused the Darlington defenders problems from the off.

Their pace and link-up player regularly saw them get in behind the Darlington defence in the first half.

Reds took the lead on 15 minutes through a deflected Tinnion strike. But Workington were caught napping just a minute later as Graeme Armstrong headed in the equaliser.

Then, Tinnion struck a stunning winner on 84 minutes after some neat link-up play between substitutes Gareth Arnison and Alex Salmon.

Up next for Reds is a trip to Halesowen on Saturday.
