Workington Reds striker Tom Kilifin has left the club on the eve of his side's crunch match with Whitby Town.

The 23-year-old asked for his registration to be cancelled and joint manager Dave Hewson has reluctantly agreed to let him go.

The former Lancaster frontman cited the commute for home matches and training from Lancaster as the main reason he felt jaded.

He had managed just one league goal so far this season and was an unused substitute against Matlock on Saturday.

His final appearance for the club came against the same opponents last Tuesday night in the FA Cup third qualifying round replay.

Last month, the forward admitted that he was disappointed with his performances and would aim to score 15 goals in his debut season.

His departure comes after two 3-1 defeats to Matlock in the space of a week and leaves Scott Allison and Nathan Waterston as Reds' only recognised strikers.

Joint manager Dave Hewson told the club website: “He came to us with a good reputation and we felt Tom would be an asset to the squad. For whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out for the player or the team, unfortunately.”

“Tom has enjoyed his brief time with the club and got on well with the squad and the supporters. He sends his thanks and good wishes to everyone at Borough Park.”

On the pitch, Reds will have to make do without long-term absentees Gari Rowntree and Anthony Wright as they look to bounce back from Saturday's crushing 3-1 home reverse against Matlock.

James Earl will serve the second of his three match ban tonight.

Opponents Whitby knocked Reds out of last season's FA Trophy and have made an impressive start to the season.

The North Yorkshire outfit are sitting in third despite losing three of their last five matches while Reds fell to 15th after Saturday's defeat.

Kick off at The Turnbull Ground is at 7.45pm.
