Workington Reds boss Derek Townsley admitted that last night’s game at Salford being called off could be a blessing in disguise for his tired team.

The crunch third versus second clash was off due to a waterlogged pitch and will now have to be rearranged for a later date, adding to both teams’ fixture woes this season.

“I guess we’re just used to it now. Unfortunately, we are playing catch-up in midweek again,” said Townsley.

“If you look at the fixtures we had midweek games scheduled up to the end of October and we are still playing them in February.”

But Townsley said that this short break would allow some of his players to recover from niggling injuries ahead of Saturday’s game at Whitby Town.

“James Earle would have missed this game and although Gari Rowntree would have played a part he was probably not 100 per cent,” admitted Townsley.

“So in many ways this is a blessing in disguise as our lads are absolutely shattered.

“Salford would have had a rest at the weekend with their match being off so on that score I can’t say I’m too disappointed.

“But I am disappointed at the fact we now have another game to fit in.”

Playing a series of tough games on heavy pitches has taken its toll on the Reds side and Townsley said he would not be calling them back into training until tomorrow.

He also indicated that Earle could still miss this Saturday’s trip to Whitby with a calf injury but Rowntree should be back to full fitness.
