Workington Reds’ unbeaten run at Borough Park came to an end today as Harrogate Town dumped the West Cumbrians out of the FA Cup.

Harrogate, who play a league above Workington in the National League North, booked their place in the third qualifying round after a tight 1-0 win which ended Reds’ unbeaten run at home in all competitions this season.

Brendan Daniels’ long-range free-kick on 83 minutes proved enough to clinch the tie as Workington bowed out of the FA Cup at the second qualifying stage for a second year running.

It was very much a game of two halves as Reds looked in control in the first, but failed to score when on top, and the second half was dominated by Harrogate.

Derek Townsley, manager of Workington Reds, said: “We are disappointed with the outcome.

“I thought we started the game well, got on the front foot and got at them. We maybe should have had some reward for that but it never happened.

“We certainly had one good chance when Joe McGee went through. We didn’t score from that which is slightly disappointing.

“We didn’t deserve to lose the game. We didn’t deserve to win it either. A draw would have been a fair result.

“In the first half we acquitted ourselves well but it shows when you get opportunities, you have to put them away.

“We always felt we could compete with them but the outcome leaves us all disappointed.”

Workington had been due to play Marine away in the Evo-Stik Premier Division on Tuesday night, however that has been postponed because Marine will be in action in an FA Cup replay.

The Merseyside club drew 3-3 at home to Washington today and the two sides will meet again for the replay in the North East on Tuesday.

Workington will be back in action next Saturday when they host Mickleover Sports in the league at Borough Park.
